How do you clean pearls that appear to be coated with perfume and hairspray? They are approx. 40 years old.?

Use warm water and ivory soap. You can soak them for about five minutes and then take them out and wipe each individual pearl with a very soft cloth. Ivory soap won't hurt the outer layer of the pearl but if you use anything harsher you will cause the pearls to loose their luster. Make sure to store them in a cotton bag or something soft and non abrasive. Don't toss them into your jewelry box with the rest of your jewelry because the metals may scratch your pearls.

maybe just wash them using a little mild soap. I knwo that they may nearly dissolve if you use vinegar or something like that so be very careful, maybe even just rub them with a soft cloth
